Keep reading! What does Elo rating mean?Ĭontrary to what you might think, “Elo” is the last name of a person! Arpad Elo (1903-1992) was a professor of physics at the Marquette University, and he invented the rating system that is adopted today by the International Chess Federation (FIDE). There is actually a lot more to say and to clarify regarding the above calculation, so I am going to give more details and to explain better the (quite complicated) paragraphs of the FIDE handbook on this subject. If different than 50%, then add 20 Elo points for each half point scored above the 50%, or subtract 50 Elo points for each half point scored less. Given the average rating of your opponents (sum of all ratings divided by the number of opponents), if your score against them is 50% then you rating will be the average approximated to the nearest integer number. If you count round-robin tournaments then you must have at the least 5 games (even against non-rated players). So, how to get a chess Elo rating? If you counts only Swiss (Open) Tournaments, then you must have at the least 5 games against already rated opponents. Novel players therefore ask how to get some Elo rating for the first time, and of course how to maximize the entering point in this ranking. This identifies the personal rating of a player, that should tell about her or his strength. One of most common word in the chess world is Elo rating.
